"Commonly held belief"

I had gotten into a debate with someone about cooking pasta. The notion that adding salt makes the water faster. It's a commonly held belief. There are lots of things out there that are in a similar boat. The flat Earth theory for instance. It turns out that many things that are commonly thought to be true aren't. The salt thing for instance. It turns out that the boiling point actually goes up. It's a phenomena called boiling point elevation. This is also something to keep in mind when doing things. Just because something is the "right" way of doing things isn't the right way of doing it. The idea there is a right way is simply copping to the same idea of the "commonly held belief" thing.I guess it goes both ways.
