There was the news story making the rounds about the hiker that got lost on the Appalachian Trail. This got me thinking about what it means to be prepared to be out of the controlled areas of the world. Preparation to not need to require survival. Preparation and knowledge to survive if need be.
I remember watching Survivorman back before we had gone on any of our trips. I’ve read plenty of books about general outdoor survival… and one that I think presents things pretty well is the book by the guy from the show, Les Stroud, Survive!
When reading about how the hiker went about trying to get rescued I was beside myself. Everything that she did was the opposite of what she should have done… Going on a trip, solo or in a group, you need to make sure you can get out alive. If you don’t know, you shouldn’t go on that trip.
