I was typing to a friend today, and I typed that “I saw them on the tube.”
Then I felt old.
The tube of the TV, as in the Cathode Ray Tube — CRT. Long after the rest of the insides of the television were replaced with solid state components the picture tube remained. At first, everything inside was basically tubes, resistors, capacitors, and resistors. Over time they were replaced with discrete transistors followed by integrated circuits.
But the picture tube remained.
Even as recently as around 15 years ago or so the CRT ruled the roost.
Now you have the latest generation who have never even seen a tube of any type in use. No, I’m not counting the degenerate case of “light bulb” as a tube. (A light bulb is nothing but a cathode if you think about it and squint just so)
Even those are getting rare.
