Electric Coal

I was having a conversation today about electric cars. Out here in the Pacific Northwest, we're lucky to have most of our power come from hydro -- so when you're driving your plug-in vehicle you're driving water. The real problem occurs when you're in the midwest. If I got a pure electric car in Cleveland, I would be running on coal for the most part. It's something to keep in mind -- the idea of "electric" cars ignores both the cost of making the batteries as well as the cost of charging them. It's like the electricity that comes from the grid is somehow free or too cheap to meter.Of course, we've heard that phrase before... power from nuclear was supposed to be too cheap to meter too.
