The Devil Beating His Wife

Years ago I took an online test from the New York Times about language. There was a question like "What do you call when it's raining while the sun is shining."

One of the answers was "I have no name for this." That is the answer I chose.

Earlier this week I ran into the phrase "the devil beating his wife." I remembered that was one of the possible answers.

Then I started reading the Wikipedia page on it.

The fact that there are so many terms for this throughout the world.

Including Hungary, incidentally.

And in Tennessee...  "the devil is kissing his wife."
