What is a technology tree?

Walking around in Home Depot last week we ran into these "technology trees."First off, this was in October. You should not have Christmas trees on sale in October.Second, what exactly is a "technology tree?" What makes it different than a pre-lit tree? I get that it might be different signaling for the LED controls than a conventional one, but what difference should that make to the consumer?
