The joys of living in a house restored by a handyman

Some of the house we're in is pretty awesome. All the built-ins... the extra rooms... all sorts of things.Then there are the janky things.I've talked about the electrical, for instance... but today it's the porch.The porch, as reported by the neighbors, was built out of some found wood at some job site. It was originally intended to be used for a boat -- you know the fine wood that's used on some out of the way bit of boat that gets lovingly varnished every couple of years.No.He put it on the porch.Apparently that cost him a couple of days every year stripping and polyurethaning it.But he didn't tell us about that routine.Oh, and also it's not pressure treated lumber either.Unlike him, I don't have random days every summer to spend re-working the porch.sighToday we just painted it.The pretty parts (under the door mat) are no longer as pretty. The bad parts (most of it) aren't nearly as bad.I always hate painting good wood. Then I have to remind myself it's not good wood to begin with.
