Order of operations

Last weekend I built a shelf under my porch. It's a simple shelf fixed to the front of the porch and back to the front of the house. A support sitting on a cinder block-y support in the middle.I spent Saturday night pouring some concrete to level out the dirt under the porch for the support. And thinking. I was thinking about how it was all going to come together.I had the supplies to build it. The big thing is to be able to put things together so the shelf is vaguely level and generally fits the space. Then I realized how to do it (though now I think I could do it even better). It all comes down to cut to fit. I know I wrote about that many, many moons ago. I had to go back to that.

  1. Cleat on the far wall (away from the house)
  2. Size the boards -- cut to fit
  3. Boardhangers on the house side
    1. At this point I have shelves, though un-mounted mostly
  4. Base for the support
  5. Support -- mark the cut
  6. Cut the 4x4
  7. Fasten the support
  8. Measure and cut the cross-braces
  9. Fasten cross-braces

The only time I used a measuring tape was to make sure the shelves were parallel. Other than that the only measure I used was a level and a pen.More on the construction (with some pictures) in a day or two.
